The Start of a 3 Week Adventure

Ok, so here I go again. They say travel while you still can, I sure wish I would’ve been taught that when I was much younger. Here’s the proof though that it’s never too late to start and there’s plenty I want to see while I’m healthy enough. With camping season still five to six weeks out, it’s time to get the backpack out and head off again once again to one of my favourite places, Mexico. I found myself a roundtrip ticket out of London to Cancun for, get this $204 Canadian, why wouldn’t I go? My first night is booked at a hostel for $26/night, if you see where I’m going with this it’s budget travelling and always getting to learn the real culture of where I’m going and using Mexico as a springboard to start these travels just works and it’s a truly beautiful country, in my eyes.

I have three weeks to travel the Caribbean of Mexico this time, backpacking from Cancun south to at least Tulum and maybe even into Belize, we’ll see how everything plays out. I need to take into account my health and be sure not to push myself too much. In the past while I’ve been there I don’t know if it’s the food or the atmosphere, but I always feel physically better and more myself. My thoughts are most of the foods I eat while there are always fresh and include more and cheaper fruits and veggies, available at a market basically on every corner. The ultimate goal of the trip, besides having fun and learning more about the history of the area is to keep the entire trip under $1500 and that includes everything flight, lodging and food, along with some excursions of course.

Three weeks gear

To give you a feel of what I’m bringing along is of course my backpack, which is 26 litres and packed in there is 3 shorts, 4 shirts, 4 pairs of undies, couple pairs of socks. A pair of flip flops, slim laptop (for more blogs), my bathroom bag, journal, books, earbuds and all the charging need for my electronics. I don’t pay for a carry-on I only have that as a personal item, which saves a cost and also gets me quickly through the airport. My plan when I land is to grab the ADO bus and take it to the bus terminal in downtown Cancun, from there it’s less than a ten minute walk to the hostel and yes I’ve walked downtown before and never have had a problem. After my first nights stay I’m just kinda playing by ear, figure out where I’m going to stay and where I’m going. Some may depend if I meet some fellow travellers heading the same way as me and if not I have no problem catching the bus or hiking to my next destination, although I’ll probably hang out in Cancun a couple days. We were here last year, so I’ve already seen quite a bit of the area and will make my way down the coast. Taking pictures and writing along the way, trying my best to capture a backpackers adventure through words and bring you, the reader along with me, especially for those of you who have Cancer and find travel difficult.

Every time I leave home it’s with a heavy heart leaving loved ones behind, but in my attempt to capture as much out of life travelling solo is sometimes necessary and also empowering. Learning more of what your capable of is important to me and also adds to that resiliency that is desperately needed in life nowadays. You can really learn so much about yourself when backpacking across a foreign country alone and trust me depending on where you stay you will find like minded people that will fill your days with conversation and laughter. Well that’s it for the opening post of this three week adventure, which I plan on blogging a lot about and just writing period. I also hope to stumble across some kind of meditation teachings along the way, that is another goal of this trip and to bring it home, hoping one day to bring mediation to others and help them see the benefits it can bring to your life. By the time you read this I should be in the air, ready to fill my space between my ears with more mental pictures.

Update, flight is delayed three hours, that puts me in Cancun around midnight. Fun start to find my accommodations late in the evening. Wish me luck, oh and the post will now be published before I’m on my way, unless further delays.
