A Little more Taste of a Different Culture.

Street Art Everywhere

To continue on with the travel part of this blog, we have now been in Mexico for about a week now and have spent all of our time in or near the downtown area in the real part of Cancun. Now when we first told people we were just staying at an Air BNB and not a resort, a lot said we were crazy and that’s dangerous. Well, for a week now we have walked everywhere and the steps on my Fitbit can prove that, been to downtown markets, Tracy has haggled with street vendors and been out to local bars, what you would call hole in the wall pubs and had a great time, even if we don’t understand the lyrics of the Mexican music that plays live almost every night, we danced and had a great time. Walked back to the loft at well after midnight and to be honest felt more comfortable than we did walking through downtown Ottawa, were we constantly ran into drug addicts and street people in our nations capital city, so unfortunate and something we need to solve.

I talk about cancer helping my loose that fear I used to have inside, one would be feeling uneasy in a new, rougher looking place. Now while the fear isn’t there like it used to be I still make sure I’m aware of my surrounding and don’t put myself into uncomfortable spots, like some guy asking me to buy weed and head back in an alley with him, that’s not gonna happen, especially after dark and that’s really only happened a couple times here.

As for the cancer anxiety part of the trip, of my biggest fear is a bowel obstruction and having to go to a hospital down here. Although some of them, from what I’ve read and heard can offer even better care than back home. I think with amount of water I’ve gone through and amount of walking we’ve done helps to definitely minimize that risk. Also gut issues is the symptom I was worried about the most and so far so good, if not even better than at home. Most of the places we’ve eaten at have used fresh ingredients, fish, veggies and fruit , along with spices. I don’t want to jinx myself, but I’ve honestly felt really good, less bloated, no sudden oh my god, “Where’s the bathroom moments”. It all seems to agree with me and that was my biggest worry and we packed a lot of medication…for that just in case. Besides the adjusting to the heat, which took at least five days, so I’m certainly glad we are here for thirteen this has been my favourite trip, besides of course my real love back home canoe camping.

With a lot of the world in turmoil now-a-days a getaway to a place like this is just what the doctor ordered, we haven’t turned the T.V. on once, it’s in Spanish, lol. To rest and recharge and watch how other live has now become a real passion, I had a conversation with a couple of young American guys up on the roof top pool tonight and we had absolutely nothing in common except we were staying at the same place, yet we talked for a couple of hours about current events and just that simple act of holding a conversation with two strangers and relating to the world’s events we found common ground, where as if that could happen on a roof top between a fifty year old and two twenty year olds, why can’t we all do that? The simple art of conversation has seemed to elude those who make the rules and laws for us, along with a lot of mankind. We are glued to our phones and laptops always plugged in forgetting what is really surrounding us…LIFE.

I write a blog in order for people to understand this diseases, but to also think about what’s really important in their own lives and I, myself still search for that, but learning, talking and experiencing life is what I will strive to do. Continually trying to get out of my comfort zone, it’s tough after all these years, but I’m learning. But, I’m also not a liar I still always check my stats for this site, looking for likes and comments, so I have work to do as well. It’s no excuse, I check to see if people are actually engaging and relating to what I have to say and also what my readers would be interested to hear about. That’s important to me.

Now I will have to include some pictures, because this place is too beautiful not to share and as this blog continues along, I plan on introducing some more video, as I try to share some more of my life that way. Moving further away from what I’m comfortable doing, I hope you enjoy, thank you for the continued support and I look forward to showing even more of what it can mean to be Cancer patient, who chooses to live. Cheers, Steve.
