Why Consistency is Key: Insights from My Blogging Journey

And cancer whispered, “I got you now’

He took a pause and said out loud,

“I think this time you’ve got it wrong”

This body, this mind it far too strong

This Life You Chose to Intercept

Does not give up or give in

Two posts in a week! What? I know, crazy right? I got to thinking last night about some of the small changes I have started to implement over the last while. So, why not start here as well. While I may not be able to be always consistent (based on the fact I’m out of service sometimes during the year) when available why not just just throw something out there and see if it sticks. Consistently, they say, is the key to growth. Albeit exercise, a certain sport, reading, learning a new language. Gains can only be made if you show up time and time again. I’m not going to go to the gym, do a couple sets of bench presses and figure wake buff and huge the next day. It takes time. This is where most of us stumble, we are wired today for instant gratification and once that instant rush or high is gone we realized real growth hurts. It’s a constant struggle to show up day after day. Real improvement shows up when you do. No one’s gonna to save you, this is up to you.

I’m the perfect example. Many times during this blogging journey I’ve told you (my readers) along with myself that I’d be more consistent. I’ve failed. I have looked at my computer so many times over the pass four years and told myself to pick it up, only to find a trivial task to take its place. And why? Why do I do that? Do I have no content or feel nothing of value to write about? Yet I told myself from the beginning this blog is for me, to tell my story and if you wanted to come along for the ride…awesome. If we end up learning something together, even better. I have failed at many other things as well, establishing a exercise routine, daily reading, meditating.

Ah failing, sounds like a bad thing… to fail. I have learned a lot from my failures though. From dropping out of school, I learned an education was important. I went to adult learning at the age of 27 to get my grade 12, you know how hard that was to stay engaged? Man, it was a dry course, much worse than high school and of all the credits I needed it was an English, just one. But, I finished with actually a 95%, who’d thought? I’ve failed at relationships, no matter how it fell apart it’s still on you to learn from it. Do the work, understand who you are. Take care of yourself and most off forgive yourself. Learn to love who you are, you’ll never find a true partner unless you learn from past mistakes. I truly believe I’m there now, but at the ripe age of 53 I still have to look in the mirror and be accountable to that face or it’s not fare to the other person in the relationship. Oh ya, this one is mainly for men, just learn to communicate, enough said.

I’ve heard success is learned from failure and I guess that makes sense. While I am far from one of today’s great minds I have learned a few things in my days. And really who are today’s great minds when some thought is put into it? I understand that success can only be gained when you decide to commit and show up day in and day out. It’s a very difficult thing to and ya sometimes life happens. Don’t let that discourage you from showing up again. I have considered many times just letting go of this blog. Getting caught up in the number of views and comments shared, but then I remind myself why do I care? If I show up here day after day success is bound to happen. That success to me is simple, if I could help on person, dealing with cancer or not find some value or hope I what I write here is how I measure it. Would I love for more people to engage? Of course! That’s where the consistency comes into play and hey I pay for this site so I may as well use it.

The one thing I have considered changing is the blogs name. I feel it doesn’t flow well anymore (if at all). Since my life has changed quite a bit since the birth of this site I figure it could use a little something, something…A little freshening up. A title that will grab attention, yet still tell the focus of the blog. How cancer won’t run my life and it hasn’t.

I actually like the name of your blog, but it’s yours to do whatever you want with. That’s one of the nice things about blogging… we have our own little space online and the freedom to express ourselves as we see fit. I’ve thought about changing the name of my blog too as it no longer reflects what it’s about at all, but it’s what I’ve been known as for so many years now that I hesitate to mess with it.
